The unguarded beaches of Janes Island offer visitors the opportunity to swim in the waters of the Chesapeake, but only at their own risk. Swimming is only allowed on Tangier Sound Side Beaches of the Island and area is accessible only by boat. Must provide your own boat; or kayak/canoe rentals are available at the Park during peak season. No swimming from the mainland park shoreline.
Construction of park improvements to Nature Center is scheduled to begin Sept 16, 2013 with a projected completion date of April 8, 2014. During this time period camper registration and limited concession items will be temporary moved to the park administration building (located to the right of the park entrance gate). Other areas of the park that will be closed during construction: Fall of 2013 - campsite A47 and A48. Spring of 2014 - campsites A47, A48, A49, A50, and A51. These sites will remain closed until construction is completed. Other closures affected during construction will be the marina fish cleaning station and the camper trailer storage area lot. NO CONSTRUCTION WORK WILL OCCUR ON WEEKENDS. We apologize for any inconvenience the construction may cause our park patrons. Due to storm damage from Hurricane Sandy, the Janes Island playground is closed to park patrons until further notice. This playground is located between Shelter 1 and 2. The swing set that is adjacent to the playground is still open for public use. We aplogize for any inconvenience this may cause our park patrons. SPECIAL PARK USE PERMITS:
In order to use amplified music, inflatibles or rides, a permit must be issued by park management. For permit information call the park office at 410-968-1565, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The consumption or possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage will be prohibited in all state park areas with the exception of interior areas of full-service cabins, motorhomes, and designated shelters.
Alcohol permits will only be issued through a reservation for a designated shelter, or other approved facility. A $35 fee will be charged for each alcohol permit. Permits may be revoked for cause by Park Manager, their designee or a Natural Resources Police Officer.
Internet shelter reservations requiring an alcohol permit will need to contact the Call Center at 1-888-432-2267, Mon-Fri, 8 am - 8 pm to make your reservation.

Shelter rentals are from 8:00 AM to Sunset.
DAMAGE TO FACILITY:
All registered shelter users will be held responsible for any damage to state property that occurs during the time of their rental and may be charged accordingly. Damage includes destruction and defacement resulting from both willful actions (vandalism) and the misuse or overuse of facilities. Damage charges will be assessed according to the degree of damage.
Due to the potential threat of the Emerald Ash Borer, the Maryland Department Natural Resources has prohibited the importation of personal firewood into all DNR owned and managed properties. Please do not bring firewood with you from home when visiting a DNR property.
Insects may be a nuisance at certain times of the year. Gnats, biting flies, mosquitoes, and ticks may be a problem during the spring, summer and fall. The park is located in a forest environment which could result in a problem with wood roaches, crickets, and mice.

Each Shelter has 15 picnic tables and parking for 50 vehicles. There is also a recreation/play area. Each Shelter has a grill. Drinking water available at or next to Shelter. Electric and Lights.
Shelter # 2: There is no parking at the Shelter itself; there is an access road for deliveries/loading-unloading only. Parking is approximately 200 feet away.

Maryland State Parks are 'Trash Free'. Bring sufficient large trash bags for trash remove. All trash must be removed. Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
